What about this view as evening blends into night after a hard day washing down oysters with champagne in Harrods and a makeover in Harvey Nichols?

Phil Hill stays at the five-star Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel in London

From our luxury room in the five-star Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel, my wife and I sat motionless and speechless as we admired the London skyline, picking out the London Eye, the Houses of Parliament, the Shard and Canary Wharf.

The Jumeirah, one of the capital’s best hotels, is easily reached from Somerset – we arrived earlier in the day by train to Paddington and a brief taxi ride to Sloane Street, in the hub of Knightsbridge.

Our room oozed comfort – the entrance hall leads into a large lounge featuring sofa, table, TV, cupboard and fridge, not to forget the daytime view of the London skyline.

The bedroom featured a king-size bed, with a mattress you just sink into, while off that room is a sizeable wardrobe beside the plush bathroom – including a mirror with a TV, although I’m not sure I’d want to shave while watching the match on the box.

While Mrs H got on with the unpacking – a job I happily agree with her that I’m incapable of participating in – I made for the gym to work off all the excesses I would indulge in later that day and then wound down with swim in the pool.

The fact I finished my workout, swim and shower before the boss had completed Operation Unpack reflects both on my lack of stamina and her meticulous attention to detail.

Next on her – sorry, our – agenda was a trip to the local boutiques, Harrods and Harvey Nichols, all within easy walking distance.

She felt like a queen having her makeover at Harvey Nichs and enjoying the oysters and champers in Harrods, although I put my foot down when she showed an interest in a Prada handbag, price £25,000.

Back at the Jumeirah for dinner in one of the three restaurants, where the food was absolutely outstanding and the service brilliant.

One of our fellow diners was actor Trevor Eve, who enjoys the place due to the lack of paparazzi shoving cameras in his face.

Afterwards it was off for a great night’s sleep before a huge selection of whatever you want for breakfast the next morning, followed by a leisurely stroll in nearby Hyde Park.

The Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel boasts 216 guest rooms, including 58 suites, along with award-winning restaurants and elegant bars – the ideal destination for your next London city break.
